28 Days of Black Authors ~Day 3

“Immigrants: we get the job done.”

Ibi Zoboi

Our next author: Ibi Zoboi, hails from Port -au-Prince Haiti. The rich culture, language, and magic influence her debut novel: American Street.

American Street is the story of Fabiola Toussaint, a girl from Haiti, who moves to Detroit’s west side. Life is much different: living with her American cousins and navigating teenage life away from her home and family.

The exploration, not only of Haitian culture, but the beauty of the city of Detroit that is often forgotten, drew me to this book. I love how clear Fabiola’s voice is in this narrative, and how we see her struggles and triumphs as she sees them.

I can’t wait to read more of Mrs. Zoboi’s writing in her next YA novel: Pride coming out in Fall 2018. Her eloquent writing with a tinge of Hatian magic made American Street wonderful.

Stay fly,
