It takes a special author to create something that will impact generations to come, yet Alex Haley did just that. In his novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family, Haley not only told the story of his own family but the story of a people whose story hadn’t been told.
Although I haven’t read Roots yet (wait on it), I have watched the miniseries from the 70s which is closely based on the novel. Roots is one of those things that deeply impacted me and I think about in day to day life. There is something so powerful about black people in America being able to trace their lineage all the way back to Africa and be proud of that rich history. The passing down of tradition, stories, and the importance of family was crucial in this series, and Alex Haley definitely passed down those things well.
