Dressing Like Kpop Albums

I’m back with another lookbook style post! I came up with this idea one day and immediately latched onto it. If you know me then you know I love kpop and I love fashion. Planning these outfits was a blast and I hope you enjoy this concept!

For each of the 7 kpop albums I own I took inspiration from the photobook and packaging to create looks. These aren’t necessarily recreations of outfits from the photobook but outfits derived from the “vibe” of the album.

BTS — Wings

Top: Thrifted

Pants: Thrifted

Blazer: Thrifted

Shoes: So Aesthetic Shop

This album is rich and luxurious so for the fit I tried to incorporate lots of textures. Starting with leather pants and a “silk” pajama top (big believer in pjs for daywear), I decided to top it off with a white blazer. To add even more dimension, I opted for my beloved iridescent platforms.

NCT 127 — Chain (Taeyong Version)

Top: Forever 21

Jeans: Old Navy

Blazer: Thrifted

NCT’s Japanese album has a lot of graphics and sporty yet structured looks. To compliment the graphic element I chose my “sisterhood” graphic tee and paired it with black jeans and a black blazer for a casual yet classy look.

EXO — The War

Top: Dillard’s

Pants: Gap

Shoes: Converse

This concept is quite different from all the other albums I own. It’s rife with primary colors and beachy prints. It’s hazy, laid back, and summery so I chose an outfit that was the same. Yellow pants are the focal point and I balanced their silhouette with a flowy black floral print top. Some cute apple Chuck Taylors were the finishing touch to this fit.

BTS — Love Yourself: Answer

Dress (as top): Dillard’s

Skirt: Macy’s (?)

Shoes: Converse

A springy luxe concept, this album is characterized by lace and pastels, romantic silhouettes, and frills. In my outfit I matched the theme with a peasant style dress, worn as a shirt and a flowy white circle skirt. In the photo book outfits they wore chunky shoes to contrast the flowy clothes so I opted for my white Converse One Stars to finish the fit.

Monsta X — The Code

Top: Forever 21

Sweater: Aeropostale

Jacket: Thrifted (Hollister)

Jeans: Dillard’s (Calvin Klein)

Shoes: Gifted

The Code is soft and neutral with cozier shots and a black, white, and nude color palette. To honor this, I went with a white knit and a brown corduroy jacket. Then, I chose light wash jeans and tan ankle boots to keep the soft look consistent.

EXO — Don’t Mess Up My Tempo

Sweater: Forever 21 (Men)

Skirt: Forever 21

Jacket: Dillard’s

Belt: Aliexpress

Shoes: So Aesthetic Shop

Leather, chains, belts, and general motorcycle rebel gear define EXO’s fifth album. It’s hard and it’s cool but it’s also really hot. The main point of my outfit is the chain belt so I built the ensemble around it. To balance proportions I chose a bulky sweater and pencil skirt. I topped it off with the leather jacket because, you know, leather and EXO are a whole ship. Of course my platforms were the only shoe for this because I definitely needed to be taller and really powerful for this concept.

BTS — Love Yourself: Tear

Top: Gifted

Jeans: Old Navy

Jacket: Thrifted (H&M)

Boots: Off Broadway

LY: Tear is probably my favorite kpop album concept wise: it’s dark and brooding, casual yet rich, and painful but beautiful. I chose a black button down and black jeans with a black belted denim jacket. As you can tell, the mood was all black, so I finished the fit with black lace up ankle boots.

Let me know which look was your favorite!

Valentine’s Day Mini Lookbook

Hey!! Valentine’s day is coming up and I wanted to share three outfit options in case you need some outfit ideas for the big day.

ⓛⓞⓞⓚ ①

Sweater: Goodwill/American Eagle

Jeans: Calvin Klein

Shoes: Converse

Necklace: Claire’s

This one is quite casual: perfect if you have school on Valentine’s day and want to be cute but still comfortable. The soft pink of the sweater is pretty and romantic, I decided to pair it with medium wash jeans rather than dark wash to keep the color palette soft. Finally, I added my white and rose gold sneakers. They’re a bit chunky but the colors make them sleek.

ⓛⓞⓞⓚ ②

Top: Goodwill

Jeans: Goodwill

Shoes: Converse

If you’re into less expected ensembles, this is for you. I’m in love with these baggy jeans and I decided to pair them with this pink and white stripe button down. With the white belt, I added some balance to the baggy jeans by emphasizing my waist and topped the fit off with my white sneakers again.

ⓛⓞⓞⓚ ③

Top: Goodwill/Rag n’ Bone

Pants: Goodwill

Shoes: So Aesthetic Shop

Earrings: Target

For a fancier but still comfy look, I went for a white textured top and hot pink pants. This is perfect for those who want to make a statement at a party on Valentine’s day. I added my platforms for added height and dimension since the iridescence tops off the crisp white and hot pink colors.

Let me know which outfit was your favorite and what you plan to wear on Valentine’s Day.

Stay fly,

Faux Fur + Perfect Presents

My brother hasn’t always known what to get me for Christmas. We’re 15 years apart and we don’t live in the same house anymore so we honestly don’t know each other that well. The best example of this disconnect was an Elmo backpack when I was at least 5 years removed from being into Elmo, So, in the more recent years I’ve asked for money or we’ve gone to the mall together to get what I want.

This past Christmas when he asked me what I wanted, I sent a link to the exact thing. In the back of my mind I knew though, that he wasn’t into online shopping and would probably give me something else. I was nervous and just hoped for a gift card or something. But his “ok I got ya” text put me at ease a little.

Fast forward to our Christmas celebration. He handed me a shirt box: way too big for a gift card. “Hey, give him some credit,” I told myself, “it could be good this year.” and it was. I opened the box to find a muted blush faux fur stole. It was gorgeous. But even more than that it was a gift that showed he knew at least something about what I liked and what my style was.

I styled that faux fur stole with a pink jacket and white shirt for the first time. I’m excited to see what other looks I can create with this piece. It was an amazing Christmas gift.

BTS IDOL Fashion Analysis

The final installment of the Love Yourself Series is out! IDOL is amazing, personally I like it even better than Fake Love and DNA (I still love those songs though). Today, we’re going to talk about the symbolism and themes exemplified in the fashion of this video.

I did a similar thing with Fake Love and since I had a ball writing and researching for it, we’re doing it again!

IDOL4

As I watched this the first time, I definitely got Afro pop vibes from it, and this was shown in the suits they wore in the opening and closing shots. The slim fit, bright colors, and busy patterns scream Nigerian street style. I totally dig it since it’s something unlike what BTS has done in the past.

IDOL5

They cut to a scene where the members are decked out in khaki colored outfits. It reminded me of a safari…but like a high fashion safari. The monochromatic color palette contrasts starkly with the vibrant suits, possibly showing the constrains that society has put on BTS (and everyone). That scene is rather bland, showing the way being in the spotlight can water down one’s personality.

IDOL2

During Yoongi’s verse, he wears a sweater with Snow White on it. In the Brother’s Grimm version of Snow White, the evil queen has a mirror which she asks continually who the fairest in the land is. When the answer is Snow White she flies into a fit of rage and attempts to kill Snow White. This sweater seems to be countering that vain and jealous view of loving yourself demonstrated by the queen, by focusing on Snow White, who wasn’t threatened by the queen and lived her life despite her antagonist’s attacks.

IDOL1

Speaking of antagonists, J-Hope wears a yellow Bugs Bunny sweater (which I really want btw). Bugs Bunny is infamous for continually outsmarting his antagonists and winning nearly every time. This reference calls back to some earlier lyrics “you can’t stop me from loving myself”, No matter how many times the other characters try to outsmart Bugs, he wins in the end. Just like no matter how many times haters try to get BTS down, they’ll always love themselves in the end.

Next let’s talk about Tae. In much of the video he’s spotted in this look:

IDOL6

Does it remind you of anything?

How about this one from Dope:

Dope1

Going from black plastic frames to gold wire ones, shorts to slacks, and a bow tie to necktie show growth and maturation. Even though they’re quite different, these outfits have the same core. Part of loving yourself is allowing yourself to grow yet keeping the core of who you are. Also, the colors of the IDOL look are definitely more vibrant and bright, showing that with growth comes more freedom and confidence.

IDOL7

Freedom and confidence are huge themes in the fashion of this video. The bold mixture of prints show a level of “I don’t really care what people say about me, I’m going do what I want.”

IDOL3

Finally, in one scene, the members are seen sporting long sating robes and loose-fitting ensembles. The aesthetic is quite similar to Blood Sweat & Tears with it’s luxury, and Fake Love with it’s saturation and dark hues. Where it differs in a meaningful way is the silhouette: these oversized robes give a feel of relaxation and regality, freedom and confidence. It seems as if BTS is saying: “Yeah, sometimes loving yourself is difficult and dark but guess what, we’re royalty and we’re comfortable with who we are.”

My Favorite Dance Practice Outfits

One of the millions of reasons I’m obsessed with Kpop is the fashion. Even when they’re practicing, the outfits rival stage ensembles. So, today I’m sharing  5 of my favorite dance practice outfits. Please keep in mind that these are in no particular order and there’s certainly many more than five, but we’d be here all night if I went through all of them. Also, appreciate my screenshotting skills because I tried hard for you guys.

Jungkook – 뱁새 (Baepsae/Silver Spoon)

JK_Baepsae

Perfection in fabric, that’s what this outfit is. The cut of the jeans is quite unexpected in a world of skinny jeans. The white button down riffs on that classic work-wear silhouette but looks breezier. And JK’s beloved Timbs truly pull together the look.

Minghao (The8) – Crazy in Love

I’m not always a fan of extremely long t-shirts like this one, but Minghao makes it work. The proportions are balanced because of his fitted joggers, and while I’m not a huge fan of his socks being pulled up so far, it does keep the look more streamlined. Unfortunately, I can’t for the life of me, find this shirt. I’m in love with the way it looks and wanted to see the smaller print of what it says. So, if you happen to find some details, let me know in the comments!

Lucas – Boss

Lucas_Boss

I almost did TY’s outfit from Boss, and while it is sensational, Lucas’ outfit really draws me. It’s simple: a white long-sleeve, black jeans, gold chain, and Adidas, but it’s styled so expertly. The top is tucked into the jeans and the jeans are belted, the gold chain is an excellent touch and the shoes tie in the sleek black and white color palette.

Sehun – The Eve

Sehun_TheEve

Again, while simple, this outfit makes a big impact. The wash of the jeans are that perfect medium denim and offer nice contrast to the black hat, tee, and shoes.

Jin – Blood Sweat & Tears

Jin_BS&T

Black on black looks *NCT plays in the background* are a staple in dance practices but Jin brings it to another level. Although it’s a button-down, the shirt doesn’t have a stiff quality, but rather hangs perfectly relaxed. Because this look is so sleek, I appreciate the minimalism of the one hole in the black jeans. Also, it looks like his shoes are suede, which brings in an unexpected texture. This outfit contrasts amazingly with Jin’s pink hair…it’s just a whole look.

Let me know what your favorite dance practice fits are!

Shopping Kpop Idol Closets

I know that almost every post has been kpop and fashion related lately but, I’m just in a mood right now so I hope you like it!

So, contrary to the title I actually didn’t get to shop in an idol’s closet but if you’re an idol reading this hit me up. Instead, this is a wishlist of things that I would steal if I happened to be best friends with some of the biggest names in Kpop right now. Also, all of these are from boy groups because, as you know if you’ve been following me for a while, I only stan boy groups. Plus, I just like that aesthetic a little more. So, here are the items I would cop:

Minghao’s “Something & Associate” hoodie

Minghao Sweatshirt.PNG

To be honest I’d take every hoodie in the kpop industry but I especially like this one because it’s just fun. Also, the classic black and white is perfect.

Taehyung’s orange belt

Tae Belt.PNG

This belt would add spice to so many different outfits, I especially envision it with a white button down, white jeans, and white sneakers and this belt for a pop of color.

Shownu’s “Art is Fraudulent” t-shirt

Shownu Shirt.PNG

The message on this shirt reminds me of how people will try to control messages by censoring art because it’s dangerous. Art is fraudulent/deceptive sometimes in it’s beauty and it’s importance because it’s world-changing. I tried not to start preaching about art. Anyway, I love this shirt, send it to me please.

Who knows, maybe my next post won’t be Kpop or fashion related?

~Akilah

BTS Fake Love Fashion

The kings are backkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!

So, I woke up at 3:30 to see the MV drop and Fake Love was worth it! Also, I’ve listened to Love Yourself: Tear twice and it’s amazing.

Once my album gets here I’ll probably do an unboxing and album review because it’s just that good. But today I’ll be focusing on the symbolic fashion in Fake Love and how it connects to BTS’ other videos fashion-wise.

The first outfit we see in the video is V’s harness look. I’m a huge fan of corsets, belts, harnesses, chokers etc, etc, etc so I’m in love with this look. Beyond the aesthetics of it however, this look really fits the message of Fake Love.

“If it was for you
I could pretend that I was happy even if I was sad
If it was for you
I could pretend that I was strong even if I was hurt”

This is a translation of the part Tae sings in this outfit. He’s pretending that he’s ok for love and basically enslaving and confining his true self: hence the harness.

On the left we have JK’s look from Fake Love and on the right V’s look from Blood Sweat & Tears. Out of all the aesthetics in BTS’ MVs I think Fake Love mirrors BS&T the most which makes sense because the songs are similar in their painful desperation.

In these looks we have the same formula: patterned button down shirt with sequined jacket (bomber or blazer) and black pants.

Jungkook says “Wishing all my weakness is hidden” in this part of Fake Love. The wild pattern of the shirt seems to suggest an inner turmoil that’s covered by the sparkly jacket which represents happiness/fun.

When J-Hope’s part came in I was immediately reminded of his Fire ensemble. Both looks share a “carefree/vaction” vibe that upon first glance seems out-of-place in a track like Fake Love. But the fact that he’s wearing these bright vacation clothes further drives home the point that he’s lying to himself and covering up the inside to the point where he, ” became to not know who I even was”

Another similarity I noticed in J-Hope’s looks were the leather pants from Not Today. In Not Today the leather seems to represent strength and edge but in Fake Love leather seems to show confinement and restriction. Especially since the color palette is a lot more muted. Speaking of muted palettes…

FakeLove9DNA1

Here we have a group shot from Fake Love and one from DNA. I was struck by how similar the two looks are. We have elements of denim, rainbow, and color however in DNA all of the colors are bright and crisp while in Fake Love they’re toned down and thinned out. As I thought about this further I realized that this continuation of fashion suggests a continuation of storyline between the two songs. DNA is about lovers who’re sure of their happiness and relationship:

“Probably in our past life and in our next lives
We’ll be together forever, DNA

Because all of this is not coincidence
Because we’ve found our destiny
DNA”

But Fake Love is when one starts to question the sincerity of the other and themselves, when destiny doesn’t seem so sure any longer. So, it’s the same story and same color palette but now it’s sadder, more muted. Also in Fake Love it says

“Love you so mad, Love you so mad
I erase myself”

And in the clothes it’s as if the colors were erased. They’re a shadow of what they used to be.

***

All in all Fake Love was beautiful, a masterpiece of our generation. When the citizens of 3025 want to know what the best thing of the 21st century was, show them Fake Love… ok lemme stop.

Anyway, I hope you liked this post, I do have a couple more screenshots of outfits similar to Fake Love from other BTS MVs, so be sure to like, comment, and follow for a possible part 2.

Go stream Fake Love and watch BTS on the BBMAs!
